Labour Day, also known as May Day and International Workers Day, is a holiday in Bulgaria every 1 May. It’s also the beginning of a six-day holiday season for many of Bulgaria’s workers.

Before the fall of Communism, Labour Day was a huge event in Bulgaria. There were military parades on a grand scale, and many used to congregate at statues of notable Communist leaders in towns all across the nation. The Georgi Dimitrov statue was especially crowded every Labour Day.
But today, most people just take some time off work to relax or do other things. A few gather to protest for workers’ rights, but the demonstrations are usually pretty small.
