A public holiday in Bulgaria
Easter Monday is an official public holiday and non-working day in Bulgaria under Article 154 of the Labour Code. It is the fourth and final day of the Easter holiday break, which runs from Good Friday through Easter Monday. Easter holidays are not additionally compensated with days off when they fall on a weekend.
The date changes each year, falling on the Monday immediately after Orthodox Easter. Easter Monday falls on 13 April in 2026, 3 May in 2027 and 17 April in 2028.
The second day of Easter
Although it closes the four-day public holiday break, Easter Monday is the second day of the Easter celebration itself. In the church calendar, the week following Easter is known as Bright Week.
Throughout Bright Week, the Royal Doors in churches remain open. The Easter greeting “Christ is risen!” continues to be used until the Ascension of the Lord, 40 days after Easter.
Visits and village celebrations
Visits to godparents, parents and friends continue on Easter Monday. In many villages, people gather for horo, traditional communal dances, in the village square. Swings and village-wide gatherings are also part of the celebrations.
Children continue their egg-tapping contests, while food left from the festive table is shared with neighbours. With the day free from work, many people also plan a short trip to round off the Easter break.
