Date and working-day status

Earth Day is an international observance held on 22 April every year to encourage environmental protection and personal responsibility for the environment. In Bulgaria, it is not a public holiday or a day off: it is a normal working day.

In 2026, Earth Day falls on Wednesday, 22 April. The date remains the same each year, falling on Thursday in 2027 and Saturday in 2028.

How Earth Day began

Earth Day has been observed since 1970, when millions of people in the United States joined demonstrations for environmental protection at the initiative of Senator Gaylord Nelson. The event led to the creation of new environmental laws and institutions.

The observance became global in 1990. In 2009, the United Nations declared 22 April International Mother Earth Day. Today, hundreds of millions of people in more than 190 countries take part, making it one of the world’s largest civic events. Each year has a shared theme, with topics including reducing plastic use, planting trees and climate education.

Taking part in Bulgaria

In Bulgaria, Earth Day activities include cleaning up parks and riverbanks, planting trees and collecting waste for recycling. Schools also mark the day with educational activities.

Participation can also take the form of small personal steps: using less plastic, separating waste for recycling, and walking or cycling. Other suggested actions include carrying a reusable bag and water bottle, repairing things rather than throwing them away, unplugging appliances, and choosing local, seasonal food.
