Date and public holiday status
International Day of Happiness is observed every year on 20 March. It is not a public holiday in Bulgaria: it is a normal working day.
In 2026, the date falls on Friday, 20 March; in 2027, on Saturday, 20 March; and in 2028, on Monday, 20 March. The day is dedicated to happiness and well-being.
Why happiness has its own day
The United Nations declared International Day of Happiness in 2012, and it has been observed since 2013. The initiative came from Bhutan, a country that measures its development not only through economic growth but also through “gross national happiness”.
The idea behind the day is that well-being, health, social support and trust matter as much as income. Each year, around this date, the World Happiness Report is published, comparing countries by how satisfied people are with their lives.
Ways to mark the day
The day often coincides with the spring equinox. It offers an occasion for small acts of kindness: talking with a friend, spending time in nature or expressing gratitude to the people nearby.
Research into well-being suggests that, once basic needs are met, happiness depends more on relationships with other people than on income. Support from loved ones, a sense of purpose, trust in society, freedom to make choices and generosity are among the strongest factors.
In that spirit, International Day of Happiness is an occasion for spending time with loved ones and making small gestures towards strangers, rather than buying things.
