A day recognising families

International Day of Families takes place every year on 15 May. Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 and observed since 1994, it recognises the family as a foundation of society. It also draws attention to the social, economic and demographic changes that affect family life.

The United Nations chooses a different theme each year. Topics range from balancing work and family life to access to education and childcare, placing the everyday needs of families within a wider social context.

Observance in Bulgaria

International Day of Families is not a public holiday: it is a normal working day in Bulgaria. Municipalities and organisations mark the occasion with family celebrations, sports games and activities for parents and children.

The May observance is separate from the Day of the Christian Family in the church calendar. That day is celebrated on 21 November, the Feast of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary.

Time together

The occasion is also a reminder of the value of simple shared activities: eating dinner together, going for a walk or having a conversation without phones. Research indicates that time spent together strengthens family bonds and children’s wellbeing more than material gifts.

For families planning a holiday together, checking school breaks alongside public holidays can help parents coordinate their leave with their children’s time away from school.
