Recognition and support
International Day of Older Persons takes place every year on 1 October. Proclaimed by the United Nations in 1990, it has been observed since 1991. The day recognises older people’s contribution to society and draws attention to issues associated with ageing.
These include healthcare, social care, loneliness and discrimination. The observance brings recognition and support together: it is both a celebration of older people’s place in society and an opportunity to focus on the difficulties they may face.
The day in Bulgaria
International Day of Older Persons is not a public holiday: it is a normal working day in Bulgaria. In the church calendar, 1 October is also the feast of the Protection of the Mother of God.
Bulgaria is among the countries with the fastest-ageing populations in Europe, making the subject particularly important. On 1 October, pensioners’ clubs, municipalities and social services organise celebrations, concerts and gatherings. The day is also an occasion to visit or call older relatives.
Care and community connections
Municipalities in Bulgaria offer services for older people, including home-based social support, day centres, pensioners’ clubs and hot lunches. Pensioners’ clubs organise excursions, amateur performing groups and celebrations, helping older people stay active and connected to their communities.
Alongside these services and organised activities, attention and time from loved ones are especially valuable. A phone call, a visit or lunch together can often mean more than a gift.
