Date and public holiday status
Bulgarian Police Day is celebrated every year on 8 November as the professional holiday of Bulgaria’s police officers. It is not a public holiday: it is a normal working day in Bulgaria.
The date falls on Sunday in 2026, Monday in 2027 and Wednesday in 2028. The observance is an occasion to thank those who maintain order and security, as well as to remember officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
History and patron saint
The holiday coincides with Arhangelovden, the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel. Saint Michael, the leader of the heavenly host, is honoured as the patron and protector of police officers.
Bulgarian Police Day was first celebrated in 1924. It was not observed from 1943 to 1993 and was reinstated in 1994 following a proposal from the police union.
How the day is observed
Formal ceremonies take place at the Ministry of Interior and its regional directorates. These include a water-blessing service and awards for staff who have distinguished themselves in their work. Officers who died while carrying out their duties are also commemorated.
Police and emergency assistance
The police work around the clock, including on holidays. In an emergency in Bulgaria, call 112, the single European emergency number. Calls are free from any mobile or landline phone, and mobile calls can be made even without a SIM card. Operators also take calls in English.
