Origins and purpose
World Tourism Day has been observed on 27 September every year since 1980. The date marks the adoption of the statutes of the United Nations World Tourism Organization on 27 September 1970.
The day focuses on tourism’s role in cultural exchange and the development of communities. Each year has a theme, with topics including sustainability, culture, local communities and digital innovation.
Tourism in Bulgaria
Tourism is an important part of Bulgaria’s economy. It ranges from seaside resorts along the Black Sea coast to winter resorts in the Rila, Pirin and Rhodope mountains. Cultural tourism, spa tourism and rural tourism are also part of this varied sector.
On 27 September, the tourism industry organises conferences, awards and open days at museums and attractions.
Public holiday status
World Tourism Day is not a public holiday: it is a normal working day in Bulgaria. The annual observance does not provide a day off.
In 2026, 27 September falls on a Sunday. In 2027 it falls on a Monday, and in 2028 on a Wednesday.
Autumn travel in Bulgaria
Autumn is a suitable time to travel in Bulgaria: places are quieter after the summer season, and the weather is often warm.
Popular destinations include Rila Monastery and Bachkovo Monastery, Veliko Tarnovo and Tsarevets, and Plovdiv’s Old Town, Ancient Theatre and hills. Melnik, Koprivshtitsa and the Seven Rila Lakes are also among the popular places to visit.
