A day for global health

World Health Day is observed every year on 7 April. The date marks the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948. Each year, the day focuses on a different theme linked to a global health challenge, such as mental health, access to healthcare, nutrition, or the health of mothers and children.

In Bulgaria, 7 April is also a day to recognise healthcare workers. It brings together the international focus on health and recognition of the people working in Bulgarian healthcare.

Events and working-day status

World Health Day is not a public holiday or a day off in Bulgaria: it is a normal working day.

Health institutions, hospitals and non-governmental organisations mark the occasion with free medical examinations, information campaigns and talks. The day is also an opportunity to arrange a preventive check-up and review everyday habits, including physical activity, sleep and eating.

Prevention and everyday health

The WHO recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week. Its recommendations also include a balanced diet with more vegetables and fruit, limiting salt, sugar and alcohol, and giving up smoking.

Regular preventive check-ups help detect many illnesses early. In Bulgaria, every person over 18 who has health insurance is entitled to one free preventive check-up each year with their GP. World Health Day offers a reminder to plan that annual appointment.
